Are Teslas Likely to Get Stolen? Latest Insights and Security Measures
As of my last update in August 2023, Tesla vehicles have experienced theft but the frequency can vary by model and location. While studies have indicated that Teslas have a lower theft rate compared to traditional vehicles, mainly due to their advanced security features such as GPS tracking and remote immobilization, certain models, particularly the Model 3, have been reported to be more susceptible to theft than others.
Influencing Factors on Theft Rates
Location: Urban areas tend to have higher theft rates. This is consistent across all vehicle types, not just Teslas.
Model Popularity: More popular models may attract more thieves. However, this is not a Tesla-specific issue but rather a general trend across the automotive industry.
Security Features: Teslas come equipped with built-in security measures that can deter theft. For example, the ability to track the vehicle using GPS and remotely disable the engine through the vehicle's software can help prevent theft.
Case Studies and Insights
Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) Report
According to the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), from 2016 to 2018, Teslas Model S and X were among the least stolen vehicles, ranking only slightly higher than the BMW 3 series. This aligns with the overall trend of Teslas having a lower theft rate compared to traditional vehicles.
Owner Experience
Based on personal experience and observations, it appears that Teslas, when equipped with advanced security features, are less likely to be stolen. As a Tesla owner for 13 years, I have not heard of a single Tesla theft case. In fact, the ability to track the car in valet mode and limit the top speed adds another layer of security, giving owners peace of mind in case their vehicle is accessed improperly.
Global Observations
There are instances where Teslas have been targeted due to vulnerabilities in their security systems. For example, in Norway, the police have issued warnings to Tesla owners after a series of thefts. Thieves used a technique called SARA (Signal Amplification Relay Attack) to extend the range of the keyfob, allowing them to enter and start the vehicle. Being electric, silent, and with a remote-controlled immobilizer, the vehicle could easily drive away without raising alarm.
To prevent SARA thefts, owners can enable the "Pin to Drive" feature. However, this can be inconvenient as it requires entering a code every time the vehicle is driven, which many owners may not find practical.
Additional Security Measures
No vehicle is completely theft-proof, including Teslas. However, there are additional security measures that can be taken to minimize the risk of theft:
Parking in Well-Lit Areas: This is a common sense step that reduces the ease with which a vehicle can be tampered with or stolen. Physical Locks and Steering Wheel Locks: These can deter potential thieves from attempting to steal the vehicle. Regular Maintenance: Keeping the vehicle in good condition can reduce the likelihood of it being considered a target for thieves.Overall, while Teslas have advanced security features, it is important for owners to remain vigilant and employ additional security measures to further protect their vehicles.
