Ashok Leyland Campus Placement Experience: A Comprehensive Guide

Introduction

Welcome to our in-depth guide on the placement procedure at Ashok Leyland for the 2018 batch of mechanical engineering students. Based on my personal experience in 2017, I'll walk you through each stage of the recruitment process, providing insights and tips for success.

Online Test by Monster India

The Test Format

The online test, conducted by Monster India, was held in college premises. It comprised 97 questions to be completed within 60 minutes. The test was divided into technical and non-technical sections.

Technical Section: 50 questions covering basic concepts from subjects like thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, machine design, and dynamics. Non-Technical Section: 47 questions, roughly split into areas such as aptitude, reasoning, and English. While reasoning and English were relatively straightforward, the aptitude section proved challenging and time-consuming.

Preparation Tips

For technical questions, having a basic understanding of the core subjects is crucial. For the non-technical section, I recommend focusing on aptitude books, such as those by Nem Singh. Effective time management is key to clearing this round. Solving as many questions as possible within the allotted time increases the likelihood of answering correctly.

Group Discussion (GD) Round

Format and Topics

After clearing the online test, 27 students from three colleges were selected and moved on to pool campus in Assam Engineering College (AEC). The group discussion (GD) round involved 8 students per group. Topics were randomly assigned and included things like improving Indo-Pak relations, Indian jobs vs. manufacturing cost disparity (MNCs), and depicting a topic from a given picture.

Preparation Tips

Prepare by discussing relevant points before the event. Time yourself for the writing and discussion phases to ensure you stay within the allocated 10 minutes.

Extempore Round

Format and Preparation

The next stage was the extempore, where students were given a topic and had to speak on it for a couple of minutes without any preparation time. Common topics included the best day of my life and the concept of eve-teasing in society.

Preparation Tips

Practice speaking on a variety of topics to build confidence and improve your delivery. Focus on clear and concise communication.

Personal Interview (PI) Round

The Interview Process

The final round consisted of a personalized interview with members of the management grade, hailing from diverse departments such as IC engine production, manufacturing, and more. The questions were primarily centered around manufacturing, industrial engineering, IC engines, automobiles, and machine tools.

Technical Questions: Both basic and in-depth questions were asked, especially about automobiles. For example, candidates were asked about how a train turns without a differential and how to apply PERT in cooking food. Additional Questions: Interviewers inquired about internships and projects, providing practical questions to assess problem-solving skills.

Preparation Tips

Have a solid grasp of manufacturing principles and basics of other subjects like material science, machine tools, and industrial management. While the IC engine was not covered in the curriculum, a fundamental understanding is essential.

Results and Next Steps

After passing through all these rigorous stages, results were announced in the conference hall. A total of 10 students from NIT Agartala were selected, and I was fortunate to be one of them. We were offered the role of a Deputy Manager after a one-year training period as training and developmental candidates.
