Choosing Between Gixxer SF and Honda Hornet 160R: A Personal Insight
With a new Honda Hornet 160R delivered just a few days ago, I'm thrilled with my decision. However, the road to choosing the right motorcycle was not without its challenges. The options were clear: Gixxer FZ or a Hornet. Let's dive into what influenced my decision.
Decision Factors: Past Experience and Engine Power
Legacy and Engine Choose: My previous motorcycle, a Unicorn, was a cherished companion for almost 11 years, and its 160CC engine made a lasting impression. The Hornet’s engine is almost identical to the Unicorn’s, which added to its appeal. Another significant factor was the combined braking system (CBS) with disc brakes, a feature I've always valued in a motorcycle. Despite the Hornet’s absence of ABS, I still felt it was the right choice for its stability and performance.
Engine Power and Gearbox Differences
Engine Capacity Comparison: Both the Gixxer and FZ have a 150CC engine, which I believe is slightly less powerful compared to the Hornet’s 160CC. However, the aforementioned engine capacity and proper gearbox combination make a big difference in overall performance. Both models are well-regarded by Honda's engineering, ensuring a reliable ride.
Handling and Comfort
Handling and Comfort: While bike handling is a debatable topic, we can conclude that all three bikes – Gixxer, Hornet, and Unicorn – offer similar handling in terms of the overall experience. For an extra mark, I gave the Hornet an edge due to its advanced CBS and disc brakes, enhancing the safety and ride quality.
Maintenance and Cost Considerations
Maintenance Costs: Servicing is often a concern, but it's a myth that Honda parts are excessively expensive. The spares are quite competitive, and I haven't had to spend a significant amount on servicing my Unicorn. Moreover, Honda parts are known for their quality and durability, often outlasting other brands.
Sales and Support: While Honda's sales and support might be less attentive due to their popularity, they still have reliable mechanics to assist with any issues. The sold Activa models keep them busy but don't detract from the quality of support they offer.
Unique Features and Braking
Unique Features and Braking: For those who value unique features, the Hornet stands out in braking. Its CBS with disc brakes provides exceptional performance, especially in comparison to Gixxer's absence of such technology. Other aspects, such as engine stability, mileage, and pillion seat comfort, favor the Hornet. Although the Hornet may not have an engine kill switch, this hasn't been a concern for me.
The Verdict
Conclusion and Recommendation: I’ve been using the Hornet for the past two months, and it has exceeded 700km without any major issues. Apart from a chain noise issue that was resolved during the first service, the bike performed admirably. If you're looking for a motorcycle that fits your needs, the Hornet is a solid choice. Just go according to what you feel; you won't disappoint if you choose either.
