Depression is a common experience that many individuals face, and finding a way to cope and maintain a positive outlook can be profoundly transformative. My own journey through loss has taught me the power of positive thinking and the importance of focusing on the positive aspects of life even in the most desperate situations.

From Grief to Gradual Healing

In 2016, my dad was diagnosed with cancer in a fourth state. The initial diagnosis was devastating, leaving no time for intervention and minimal support. We were forced to restructure our lives around traveling between Bangalore and Hyderabad to care for him. Despite my best efforts, I wasn’t able to move him to Bangalore, and he passed away within a month. Losing him so suddenly took a heavy toll on everyone, including myself.

The Breakdown of the Distractions

The emotional and physical strain was immense. I began to lose interest in life, my appetite dwindled, and the world around me seemed insurmountable. My family and kids needed my support, my mom required comfort, and I was drowning in my grief. At this critical juncture, I realized that I needed to find hope and motivation.

Shifting Attitudes and Embracing Positivity

To overcome the depression, I made the resolution to adopt a more positive mindset. Every day, I would remind myself that my dad’s early release from pain was indeed a blessing. He didn’t suffer for months or years, and our family didn’t endure the emotional turmoil. This perspective served as an anchor, grounding me in a semblance of peace.

I started keeping a journal, documenting all the happy moments I encountered daily. Expressing gratitude became a regular practice, one that slowly but surely brought me back to life. I was actively involved in caring for my mom, helping her to come out of her pain. Surrounding myself with positivity—both in thoughts and actions—became my mantra, and over time, I began to see a semblance of light at the end of the tunnel.

Lessons Learned and Moving Forward

Life, while full of ups and downs, mandates that we continue to move forward. Finding a reason to motivate ourselves and approaching challenges with a positive mindset can truly make a difference in our journey through difficult times. Understanding the significance of the present moment and the importance of being grateful for what we have allowed me to overcome challenging situations.
