Driving a vehicle with an automatic transmission can often be straightforward, but knowing which gear the transmission is currently in can be crucial for safe and efficient driving. Methods to Determine Gear Position
Gear Indicator
Many modern vehicles come equipped with a dashboard display or a gear indicator on the center console that clearly shows the current gear selection (Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, etc.). This is typically the easiest and most direct way to check the gear status. While driving, simply glance at the display to get an immediate read on which gear the transmission is in.
Shifter Position
The gear shifter itself often has markings indicating the selected gear. By closely observing the position of the shifter relative to these markings, you can easily determine which gear is currently engaged. This method requires a bit more hands-on attention but can be very accurate when done correctly.
Engine RPM
In some cases, the current gear can be inferred by observing the engine RPMs (revolutions per minute). Generally, if the RPM is low while driving at a consistent speed, the vehicle is likely in a higher gear. Conversely, if the RPM is high, particularly at low speeds, the vehicle is probably in a lower gear.

I've driven many cars I was not familiar with, but there's usually an indicator somewhere. For example, some modern shifters and consoles use LED lights to indicate the gear position. Similarly, modern dashboards can display the gear status. If you are familiar with a specific car model, you can often compare the tachometer and speedometer readings, as these can also provide insight into the vehicle's performance and gear position.
Additionally, if the gear shift is not in the default positions (P, R, N, D, etc.), you can count the upshifts. Most automatic transmissions start in first gear and shift through higher gears as needed. For instance, if the shifter is switched to a side position, you can manually count the upshifts to determine the current gear. This method requires some practice but can be very useful.
