A Long-Term Journey with Depression: A Personal Perspective
Depression is a deeply personal and often invisible struggle that can affect individuals for extended periods. Can one really be depressed for 15 years, if not longer? My personal journey with depression began at the tender age of 12, but signs of impending problems surfaced much earlier, as young as 5.
Understanding Depression
Understanding depression is crucial, especially when it is treatment-resistant and persists for a long duration. Treatment-resistant depression is a very real issue, affecting individuals who do not respond adequately to standard treatment options. Thankfully, there are various approaches to addressing this challenge, including a combination of pharmacological therapy, talk therapy, and in some extreme cases, ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy).
A Personal Tale with Depression
I have had depression since I was 12, and despite numerous episodes as a child, my mental health began to deteriorate significantly in 2009. This long-standing condition means that I have been battling depression for more than 15 years, if not longer. My depression is also not responsive to medications, and my focus is now on minimizing PTSD symptoms, hoping they might improve my mood.

Even without professional help, I found strength in self-counseling. I read the Bible daily for two years, which provided a sense of peace and commanded control over my emotions. By writing down every thought and addressing them one by one, I achieved a sense of peace.

The underlying causes of depression are often complex and multifaceted. They include issues like loss, low self-esteem, hidden fears, and social withdrawal. Common feelings associated with depression include guilt, shame, disappointment, hate, frustration, and hopelessness.

While certain medications can be helpful, they are often prescribed after evaluating the individual's stage of depression. These medications may help manage symptoms but are not a cure-all. Seeking professional help is crucial, as understanding and support can be vital for managing depression effectively.
