Finding Joy in Unexplored Hobbies: Redefining My Free Time
I often spend my free time engrossed in activities that bring me a sense of fulfillment and personal growth. Two of my favorite pastimes are reading and drawing. Reading, whether it be historical accounts or absorbing a captivating novel, is not only a source of entertainment but also an immense learning experience. Each book reads like a new adventure, allowing me to explore different worlds and cultures, thereby enhancing my vocabulary and broadening my horizons. Drawing, on the other hand, is a means of expressing my creativity. It is a process that demands patience and determination, and it significantly contributes to my mental well-being. Whenever I feel sad or stressed, picking up a pen and paper and letting my imagination run wild provides immense relief and a welcome distraction from daily worries.
The Confusion of Free Time
However, the concept of free time often leaves me puzzled. As the character Gunsmith from the 2006 film The Shooter wisely points out, 'things are not as they seem.' When I feel I know something, I often realize that my previous understanding was incorrect. This introspection is important, but it also adds a layer of complexity to the idea of what I should do in my spare time. There are many activities that I have not taken up recently, and the question of what I should do next can be quite daunting.
Total Freedom with Retirement
Thankfully, I have been blessed with the freedom to choose my activities. Being retired, I am now my own boss, and my time is my own. I can engage in the activities I love without the constraints of a daily routine. As a retired individual, I enjoy the flexibility and independence that comes with this new phase of life. I can pursue my hobbies and interests without the pressure of deadlines or performance evaluations that were once part of my job.
A Routine of Increased Value
My retired life is structured around a routine that combines practical tasks with enjoyable activities. Working at a gun range where I sell ammunition and paper targets, I find myself cleaning guns and sweeping up spent casings during my “spare time” at the range. At home, I switch between household chores such as cleaning, cooking, and laundry. But my free time is dedicated to more creative pursuits like reloading ammunition and tumbling brass. These activities not only provide a sense of accomplishment but also keep my mind active. On rare occasions, I indulge in a gaming session playing Battlefield 5 on my PlayStation, which adds a touch of excitement and relaxation to my day.
Another aspect of my routine includes practicing my harmonica and taking very long walks for exercise. I often set a mental timer while walking to estimate the time it takes to complete two miles. Running in place for an hour is another favorite activity, and while it might seem unusual, it provides a significant workout and a great sense of accomplishment. These activities help me maintain a balance between physical well-being and personal fulfillment.
