Reliability Analysis of Ford EcoSport Diesel Post 100,000 Kilometers: An Owner’s Perspective

When it comes to diesel engines in smaller SUVs, the Ford EcoSport Diesel has been a topic of discussion among automotive enthusiasts. While some have highlighted issues such as cam belt breakdowns and turbo failure, others praise its dependability. This article delves into the real-life experiences of a Ford EcoSport Diesel owner, detailing its performance and reliability after reaching 100,000 kilometers.

Initial Experience and Mileage

I began my journey with a Ford EcoSport Diesel 1.5 Ambiente at 77,000 kilometers, the last 20,000 of which were covered in a mere six months. My current mileage averages around 3,500 kilometers per month. Until now, I haven't encountered any engine issues, making it a truly hassle-free driving experience. Regular service every 10,000 kilometers is all that is required, with no additional maintenance needed.

Performance and Efficiency

The engine's performance has been impressive. I have conducted various tests, including revving the engine and lugging it, to gauge its power response and fuel efficiency. Surprisingly, all I needed to do was a single crank to start it up. Its fuel efficiency is commendable, with an average of over 19 kilometers per liter (kmpl) with the air conditioner on and more than 20 kmpl without it.

Comparison with Other Engines

In comparison to other diesel engines such as the Fiat MultiJET, Renault K9, and Toyota D4 Diesel, the Ford EcoSport's engine has been deemed less reliable. While the frequency of cam belt breakdowns and turbo failures is higher, my experience has been quite different.

Long-Term Reliability

My Ford EcoSport Diesel has clocked 160,000 kilometers over four years without any major engine troubles. In the first 83,000 kilometers, only three parts had to be replaced: the AC blower fan, door lock, and AC pipe, which cost an estimated Rs 12,000. Currently, the car still starts with a single crank, maintains excellent fuel efficiency at 18 to 20 kmpl, and has the lowest cost of ownership, with service costs around Rs 5,000 when using synthetic oil and fluids.

Conclusion

The Ford EcoSport Diesel has proven to be a reliable and efficient vehicle for long-term use. Despite the occasional issues faced by other owners, my experience has been positive, and I am contemplating postponing my next vehicle purchase for at least three years or 250,000 kilometers, given the car's excellent performance and low maintenance requirements.
