Why Choosing Volvo Cars: Reliability, Safety, and Design

When it comes to car purchases, many factors influence our decision. For some, it may come down to reliability, while others might prioritize design or safety. This article explores why I chose Volvo cars and what I look for in a vehicle.

While I don't typically focus much on Volvo, when I do, it’s usually because I find them reliable. In fact, when I need to make a decision among European brands, I often pick Volvo over others. However, I currently drive a Toyota, not a Volvo.

Reasons Behind My Choice of Volvo

Having owned multiple new Volvos, I can confidently share three key reasons why I would choose them:

Quality

Volvos are definitely not Dacias (a Romanian car brand with a poor reputation for quality). When compared to their competitors in the premium market, such as German, Italian, and Japanese brands, Volvos offer solid value for money. The quality of their products is on par, and the competitive nature of the market means they are well-priced despite their reputation for reliability.

Safety

Safety is a top priority in premium cars, with every manufacturer meeting regulatory requirements. But when it comes to additional safety features, Volvo stands out. For example, the Whips back protection in the event of a collision goes beyond what is required, providing better protection than many competitors like BMWs. Additionally, Volvo's City Safety technology is ahead of the curve, offering advancements that traditional NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) tests can't fully capture.

Design

Volvo design is often understated, yet recognizable. While it might not be a deciding factor for some, in the case of the XC60, design plays a significant role. My first experience with a Volvo, the simplicity and functionality of the XC60 really appealed to me. The car's design was not just aesthetically pleasing but also practical, especially its boot space for family needs.

Volvo's Safety Excellence

Volvo's commitment to safety is unmatched. They have a well-built and robust reputation. One example I can share is a scenario where we were involved in a head-on collision with a semi-truck while towing a refrigerated unit. Our truck's engine was forced down onto the pavement, and despite the serious damage, our driver managed to escape through the roof unharmed. His leg was only scratched, in stark contrast to what could have happened in a different car.

From Hatred to Love

My journey with Volvo cars wasn't always positive. Initially, I detested the brand. Renting a 240 on business trips was a nightmare due to its poor handling in corners and susceptibility to engine malfunctions on cold mornings. However, one trip in a 740 Turbo Estate changed my mind completely. Its spacious interior and ease of use quickly made me a loyal Volvo owner.

This estate model was perfect for my needs, with ample boot space for family use. Additionally, the drive from London to Newcastle-on-Tyne was effortless and comfortable, something I hadn't experienced before in a car. The 740's ease of travel, combined with superior safety, eventually won me over.

In conclusion, the combination of reliability, safety, and design has made Volvo a trusted and beloved car brand for me, despite my initial skepticism.
